Atola Insight Forensic offers complex data retrieval functions along with utilities for manually accessing hard drives at the lowest level, wrapped in a very simple and efficient user interface.

Disk Diagnostics

The Atola Insight Forensic is able to accurately diagnose hard drives that cannot be recognized or identified by any system including the vast majority of disk imaging, data recovery, and data acquisition products, even the most sophisticated ones. In cases where the Atola Insight cannot recognize the hard drive, it can still diagnose the drive by sensing the SATA PHY status, sending low-level, vendor-specific commands into the HDD, and interpreting electrical currents. 

The Atola Insight's automatic diagnostics function evaluates the state of the hard drive, identifies specific errors and then recommends steps for moving forward with HDD recovery and data extraction. This is the starting point for all data recovery or acquisition cases. The operator simply plugs the damaged hard drive into the DiskSense unit and clicks a single button to start the automatic checkup. Real-time status updates are displayed throughout the diagnosis and a full diagnostic report is then generated in less than 5 minutes.

This engine identifies damage in the following areas:

  • Circuit Board (PCB)

  • Motor

  • Heads (status of each head is displayed)

  • Media Surface

  • Firmware Area

  • Partitions and File System

Disk Imaging

Hard drive imaging is the most important part of the data acquisition process. Trying to extract files directly from a potentially failing media is dangerous because the media can stop working at any moment. This means the operator must transfer the data quickly and safely from the original HDD to a backup HDD and only then proceed with further evidence analysis using the backup copy.

The Atola Insight Forensic is the industry's most efficient system for imaging hard drives, SSDs and USB mass storage media quickly and safely. The system's maximum imaging speed is 520 MB/s.

Password Removal

Hard drives locked with ATA passwords can pose a big problem for forensic and data recovery experts. When a hard drive is locked with an ATA password, there is no way to gain access to the drive without entering the correct password and there is no way to crack the password using "brute force" style methods. The Atola Insight's automatic password removal function is able to extract the original password from the hard drive's firmware area and unlock it in under 2 minutes with just a few mouse clicks.

Note: Unlocking the hard drive does not affect its hash value because the password is stored in the hard drive's firmware area (which is never included in hash calculation).

Data Recovery

Bad Sector Recovery: 

Like all high end data recovery tools, Atola Insight Forensic supports bad sector recovery via the Read Long approach.

However, we are one important step ahead of competition: the locations of recovered sectors are automatically stored in the case management database. After imaging is complete, Atola Insight automatically marks all files that contain sectors recovered with the Read Long command.

File Recovery: 

File Recovery is the part of the Atola Insight Forensic system that provides file extraction capabilities for both good and damaged drives. It supports all versions of the most popular operating systems: Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Supported file systems: 
NTFS, Ext 2/3/4, HFS, HFS+, ExFAT, FAT16, FAT32

Recovery of deleted files supported for: 
NTFS (all versions), FAT16, FAT32, HFS, HFS+, HFSX

Firmware Recovery:

Firmware corruption is rare for modern hard drives, but when it occurs, there is no way to extract data until the firmware has been successfully repaired. This is one of the most difficult tasks a technician can be challenged with.
